While the fortunes of the forest industry have declined somewhat in recent years due to changing market and political conditions, it continues to make an important contribution to the economy of the Comox Valley. Because of their significant economic spin-off there are significant opportunities for value-added niche wood products, such as hardwood flooring, custom furniture/cabinetry manufacturing.
The recent difficult period in the industry made forest companies reluctant to undertake the necessary reinvestment in their mills, meaning that many mills are not currently optimized for the current environment, such as the use of smaller second-growth timber. This means there is an available market opportunity to increase the local processing and value-added manufacturing of wood products. The development of the Bevan Road industrial site in Cumberland gives the future development of the industry a place to grow.
