Labour Force


The Comox Valley labour force consists of approximately 49,140 people working in diverse careers which range from mining to agriculture, from law to science, from teachers to financial advisors, the Comox Valley has them all.

The Comox Valley labour force is made up of highly skilled and educated employees. Approximately 57% of our labour force has post-secondary training at either a trade college, university or other institution (Financial Post 2007). 

As a result of the growing economy more than 25% of the total workforce in the Comox Valley works within the business, finance, administration or management sector, 21% work within the primary industry or trades sector, 11% work within the natural, applied science and health fields and 5% work within the social science, government service and education sector (Financial Post 2007).

The top four employers within the Comox Valley include 19 Wing Comox (1,430 employees), School District #71 (1,400 employees), St. Josephs Hospital (1,049 employees, and Mt. Washington Ski Resort (950 employees during winter months). 

The top 3 retail stores include the Royal Canadian Superstore (300 employees), Wal-Mart (218 employees), and Home Depot (120 employees). For a detailed list of the major employers within the region please see associated statistics at the bottom of the page.
